Since its opening, the facility has received much recognition as an example of how to build a cost effective, environmentally efficient building, earning it the Lieutenant Governor of B.C. The renovation opens up the house for more communal living space across the many levels, creating a tiered effect continuing out onto a generous patio. Black wood siding gives it a much-needed infusion of sleek modernity. The rocky, vertical cliff on which this home is precipitously sited pushed the house right up against the street, but allows for a flat entry and easy access. The pavilion is composed of two long storage bays with indoor training facilities with event hosting spaces located above, accommodating both athlete and spectator needs. Using this unusual obstacle to its advantage, this project will consist of two structures -a principle building and a coach house- connected across the creek by a small bridge. Despite its proximity to Vancouver, the snow loads in Whistler are incredible- many multiple times Vancouver’s loads, which result in a completely different approach to design. It's why we love intensely regional design- it produces a completely different outcome based upon topography, weather, climate and materials. Turning towards views, sunshine, and allowing for an expanded yard with southern exposure. Screens on the upper bedroom level provide privacy to the neighbors, while on the main level a landscaped hedge gives shade and privacy to the yard. A large black metal frame runs around the upstairs deck. An architectural feature that defines the house, provides privacy while also providing much needed shade to south facing rooms. In the basement, a rental suite has direct access at grade to a sunken courtyard and will provide for light, air and garden access. Materials for the home are simple and robust. Aluminum clad wood windows, composite cladding for the architectural frame, and stucco over exterior insulation. It achieves near-passive performance through its airtightness and thick insulation. Inside, oak floors and white millwork contrast the dark exterior, and simple, refined detailing accentuate the strong architectural forms. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/54e37ac2e4b012bb071fbb47/1661183459870-AMXDI8VQA7VTMKCBCR8O/view1+%284%29_page-0001.jpg IN PROGRESS - KENNEDY Sited on a generous, flat, mid-bock lot with a south facing yard close to Edgemont Village in North Vancouver, the timeless lines of this home are accentuated by its crisp, modern detailing. The district of North Vancouver encourages steeply peaked and gabled rooflines through height relaxations for steeper roofs, at the same time limiting upper floor size to 75% of the main floor. These two combined restrictions pushed the design solution into the direction of a twin gabled roof with a high vaulted common space between the two on the main floor. As with many solutions, it had to work on other levels as well- it separates the principal suite on the east from the children’s wing on west. A bridge connects the two wings, with a library and viewing area up high. Trees as high as 120’ border the property to the south and west, creating a feeling of being in a forest clearing. Because of the size of the property, it was possible to conceive of living on a single level, in a home draped around an internal courtyard with a generous pool.
